Every year a million Americans get salmonella poisoning. Several hundred will die. Needlessly.
Salmonella poisoning could be mostly prevented — has been prevented — in Europe, where a vaccine for chickens has greatly reduced the number of incidents over 97%.
13% of supermarket chickens have salmonella.
So why aren’t poultry producers doing this in the USA? Because the FDA and USDA are too underfunded and powerless to demand it, and the industry won’t do it because the cost reduces their profits.
