Wrangell-St. Elias Tebay Lakes 2009

We camped several nights on a mattress of lichen two feet thick, never slept better. Here are some pictures from our trip.

We’ve spent about 6 months of vacation time in Alaska, yet have seldom seen beavers.  But this area was full of dozens of very large beaver dams the size of a house, and two performed some water ballet for us.

Hiking in this lush area was wonderful.  We didn’t see any bears or moose, but often heard the melancholy melodies of loons floating across the water.
